Abu Simbel Temple

Abu Simbel Temple consists of two massive ancient Egyptian temples carved into the rock, located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan. The complex was built in the 13th century BCE during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II.

Abu Simbel was constructed to commemorate Ramesses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari, as well as to celebrate Ramesses II’s victory at the Battle of Kadesh.

The Great Temple is dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and Amun, as well as to Ramesses II himself. The temple façade is adorned with four colossal statues of Ramesses II, each about 20 meters tall. These statues depict the pharaoh seated on a throne, wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. Between the legs of the statues are smaller statues of the pharaoh’s family members.

The Small Temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari. Its façade features six statues: two of Ramesses II and two of Nefertari. The statues of Ramesses and Nefertari are the same height, emphasizing the queen’s high status.

In the 1960s, the construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge the temples. To save this priceless heritage, an unprecedented international operation under UNESCO’s supervision was carried out. The temples were dismantled into thousands of blocks, each weighing up to 30 tons, and relocated 65 meters higher and 200 meters further from the shore. They were then reassembled, and an artificial hill was built around them. This project is considered one of the greatest engineering achievements in archaeology.

Today, Abu Simbel is one of Egypt’s most popular tourist attractions and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors are drawn not only by its monumentality but also by a unique astronomical phenomenon. 🌞 Twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, sunlight penetrates the heart of the Great Temple and illuminates the statues of the gods inside the sanctuary.
